Moving to Windows 11 does not have to be a hard project. Here’s some tips for making the process smooth.
As we have mentioned previously, Windows 10 goes end of support on October 14 2025. You should start planning now for this eventuality. If you think moving to Windows 11 is a bit premature, it is already 3 years old! It was released in October 2021.
What does end of support mean?
There comes a point in the software lifecycle where it is no longer viable nor efficient to be maintaining old versions. Resources are better used in securing and improving newer versions. When Windows 10 goes end of support, it will mean:
No more security updates
This will make the operating system (and the business) increasingly more vulnerable to attack as new hacks are found and not addressed.
No bug fixes or support
Any bugs that appear will not be fixed. Support from Microsoft will stop.
Steps for moving to Windows 11
1. The first step is to identify if there are:
a. any devices still on Windows 10, and
b. of those devices, any that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. You can use the PC Health Check app [https://aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp] to see if a device is capable of moving to Windows 11.
2. Plan the upgrade. You will need to organise licenses, and new devices to replace those that aren’t fit for the job. Especially with the hardware, do it now to avoid the rush and possible shortages.
3. Consider other software that you use. Is it suitable for Windows 11? If not, what’s the alternative?
4. Perform the upgrade, and the transfer of data if needed.
